Thesis
Commercial insurance is run on labor, not software.
Underwriting companies deliver two intangible goods: underwriting decisions and a promise to pay a loss. Delivering them takes far more work than it looks from clearance to rating, quote/bind/issue, reinsurance, accounting, endorse and claims. That’s why 15 years of insurtech has barely moved the 35 cents of every dollar of premium that goes to delivery, or the days and weeks brokers wait for answers. Point solutions will not close that gap. The entire architecture has to be torn down and rebuilt.
Why Now
Today's systems are fragmented, linear workflows, with decades of accumulated technical debt. Legacy carriers can’t refactor fast enough. Insurtechs solved narrow problems but underestimated the complexity of the full transaction lifecycle. For the first time, deep underwriting expertise and top-tier AI engineering can be pointed at the whole problem at once to build the infrastructure underwriting companies actually need.
Approach
AI should not replace elite underwriters, claims professionals, or compliance operators. It should make them dramatically more productive. Our platform optimizes the full stack including submission intake, underwriting, policy issuance, claims, compliance, reinsurance, and portfolio intelligence; so a lean team can outperform organizations many times its size.
The same architecture serves the capital behind the risk. Reinsurers get structured, real-time visibility into exposure, pricing, and concentration instead of a stale bordereau manually compiled from disparate systems. Better service wins better business, and better data wins better capital. Both compound on every expert underwriter we add.
Foundation
Our founder brings 19 years in casualty insurance, including building a casualty division in a newly public insurer from zero to more than $220 million in premium in 3 years. He recruited top underwriting talent across 7 products while standing up guidelines, rating, forms, distribution, and reinsurance from scratch. He has placed treaty and facultative reinsurance, architected complete workflows, and spent more than a decade inside a legacy system while vetting insurtech solutions meant to replace them throughout his career.
Our founder knows what works and what doesn’t, from the underlying systems to the broker and reinsurance markets. One Pen is the company two decades of experience has led to...to deliver the service the commercial broker market has been desiring for years.
